Fun Holiday Splurges

A financial planner telling you how to spend MORE money over the holidays?  What madness is this?  Well, I’ve about read my fill of articles telling me to make a list and check it twice before double buying gifts for Great-Aunt Gertrude (by the way I do use a Christmas list and it really works!).  I’m ready to have some fun, and darn it, sometimes that means spending money that should have gone into my kids’ college accounts.

  1.  Have a professional hang your outdoor lights.  I’ve been wanted to do this forever and this is my year!  I’ll not have my usual half-witted attempt at lights and not risk my life on a ladder to do a decent job.  Can’t wait!
  2. Buy Christmas Crackers.  You see these in all the catalogs and at Tuesday Morning, Michael’s, etc.  How about buying them for once?  Kids love these and they provide a little amusement when things get slow over school break.
  3. The Lego Advent Calendar.  Yes, it’s outrageously expensive, but, kids get so into this.  A daily treat during December.
  4. Pumpkin Egg Nog.  Sure, its 50% sugar, but it makes the BEST French toast ever.
  5. Burn some gasoline.  Make an effort to get out of your neighborhood to see the lights and decorations around town.  Go where the rich people live!  Even better, go to your local zoo or botanic gardens to see their light displays.
  6. Go to a holiday play or concert.  Last year, we saw the Cirque De Soleil Christmas extravaganza and it was awesome!  Lots of radio stations host holiday concerts with multiple cool bands in one evening.  Money well spent to increase holiday cheer.

Enjoy your holiday season! I’ll be back in January with more Grinch-y ideas for responsible financial household management!
