What’s good for your pocket and the environment? Keeping used gear in the hands (and on the feet) of people instead of in landfills. Read on, Intrepid Adventurer, for resources:
The Names You Know
- REI Co‑op – Many stores have “Garage Sale” or used sections with returned and gently used gear and apparel. The online store is closed, so find your nearest location.
- Patagonia – Sells secondhand Patagonia items through its Worn Wear used-gear program online and in some stores. Who doesn’t need a cozy Patagonia fleece, or ten?
- The North Face – Offers refurbished and returned items through its Renewed program. Great for replacing those ski pants with the duct tape over the tear at your ankle.
- Arc’teryx – Runs Arc’teryx ReGEAR, focusing on pre-owned Arc’teryx clothing and packs. A great way to buy a pricey brand.
- NRS – Has a used section for paddling gear and inflatables. Brrr, maybe as a prep for summer activities!
Large dedicated used-gear platforms
- Geartrade – If they don’t have it, you don’t need it! Skiing to ice-climbing to camping, it’s all here.
- Rerouted – Used-gear marketplace emphasizing camping, climbing, and technical equipment. For all the super-difficult stuff I plan to never do.
- Out&Back – Great brands, huge selection of clothes and gear.

- Second Wind Sports: – I have an account here and they have gotten me good money for my used ski clothes and gear.
- Sports Plus – All my kids’ bikes, lacrosse gear, and replacement badminton birdies came from this small but might store on South Gaylord Street.
- Wilderness Exchange – Maybe before heading to the REI flagship store across the street, give this small business a chance at your business.
