It feels like a tale of two economies out there. On the one hand, headlines talk of lower unemployment claims and plenty of job openings. On the other hand, clients from experienced professionals to my teenaged kids are sending out 100 resumes and barely getting a look.
What is up? Here are some insights:
- Economic forecasts of gloom and doom for over 2 years have made many higher level executives reluctant to hire. This even as they wear out their current employees with overwork.
- The backlash over the Great Resignation has made hiring managers more wary of making offers to new employees.
- Ambiguity over growth and hiring plans has led to slashing of recruiting and hiring teams. Fewer people are sifting through more submissions, creating large time gaps (if ever) to hear about your submission.
- You could need to re-skill or open your mind to new industries. Tech has been slashing positions, but health care, manufacturing, and construction are still recovering from Covid job losses. Maybe you can put your tech skills to work in a hospital or large construction firm.
